Ajanta Caves, located off Aurangabad Maharashtra, is home to a beautiful horseshoe shaped set of Buddhist paintings and sculptures. This is a relic from Cave 1. It is said to be one of the last caves excavated and possibly wasn’t a preferred place of worship, as there is no sign of any soot deposits from butter lamps. Commissioned by the Vākāţaka Emperor Harishena, the Jataka tales in cave portray the royal life of King Siddharta before he was christened as the Buddha. The relics date to the 5th century, and is an ancient Indian history buff’s dream destination.
